pink roses in the dish room

The beautiful winter light that’s reflected by the sky brings out the very best of white decor and is just right to brighten up those slightly gloomy February days. And these roses make me soooo happy!

 

Here’s a little peek at the new area in the house that I'm calling the “dish room”. In December I decided to take an unused bedroom and use it as the main hub for a lot of my styling props, extra dishware and my collection of colored glassware.

 

Not only was the space ideal, but the morning light was also so perfect for those early morning photo shoots. 

With that in mind, I set up a cottage farmhouse display wall with furniture that was already in the room.

 

A dark brown-black Ikea desk and two shelves were transformed with a few coats of white chalk paint. I papered the wall with a fun beadboard textured wallpaper which saved me quite a bit of money on using actual beadboard.

All I bought, besides the wallpaper, was a custom-made peg rack to fit right under the bottom shelf and a cute gingham curtain for the desk opening.

What I thrifted and how I styled it…

Lastly I found the most adorable vintage chandelier to finish off the room! The space is almost complete. This is now a great spot for my early morning photo shoots and also fulfills my organizational tendencies! 😜

The cute little thrifted chandelier transforms my new "dish room" into a cozy little space. My good friend Laura and I were checking out a few of our favorite thrift and consignment stores last week, when we spotted this adorable little chandelier.

 

It was marked $75, but when I asked the salesperson if that was the final price, she said it was actually 60% off! So, this little darling came home with me for only $30! Yay!!

 

This is a vintage inspired look I put together for fall. I used lots of white ironstone and hints of brown transferware and natural elements like wicker to create a soft autumn vibe.

elegant table linens for the holidays

 

Oh, how I love a pretty tablecloth! One swoosh of fabric over your table, and it’s instantly transformed into something out of a magazine! 

There’s no denying I have a passion for beautiful table linens, and August Table is among my top 3 choices whenever I’m setting a pretty table.

A lovely tablecloth with matching napkins is the best way to start your table setting, and then all the pieces seem to fall into place.

Recently, I’ve set several tables using some of August Table’s newest patterns and colorways, so I’m here today sharing with you some of my favorite looks.

 

New to the line are table runners and placemats. In addition to tablecloths, these little gems offer a more casual and informal look to your table. 

Here we’ve got the Villa Vaux Petit Gray set with contrasting Villa Vaux napkins with a hint of green.

 

I absolutely LOVE the hint of green in the napkins, and I brought in a similar green with the vintage glassware, candles and florals.

 

This look is perfect for fall, but honestly it works any time of the year! 

The foraged florals are all from my garden, and you’d be surprised how a bit of greenery can lift the whole table and draw you in to taking a seat.

 

Collecting vintage candles has become a fun activity and you can often find them at yard sales and thrift store for a few dollars. Just a touch of color with the candles really ties this look together.

 

White Japanese anemones in the arrangement are one of my all-time favorite flowers, and they start blooming in early fall, which is so lovely when not much else is flowering in the garden.

 

Switching out the napkins and a few accessories, transforms these place settings into an elegant Thanksgiving table. 

All we did here was trade in the napkin for the matching Villa Vaux Gray ones, add a terrific turkey salad plate, a new blue gray goblet and use evergreen eucalyptus for the centerpiece.

   

Here’s my favorite pattern Villa Vaux again, but this time in a tablecloth on this little alfresco corner table in the back yard. 

It’s set up for tea and croissants among my collection of coleus and pretty begonias.

 

And of course, a pumpkin on the table reminds us of the season we love most!

 

Setting my dining room table with fall inspiration started with a beautiful Talelayo Sparrow tablecloth from August Table, 

and then I added beautiful placemats, plates, goblets, napkins and candlesticks from CB Lifestyle.  

 

To soften the center of the table, I added roses, cosmos, dusty miller and olive branches from my garden. A little bunch of dried grasses helps soften the look.

All that was needed was to add a few autumn details, like pumpkins and these adorable blue and white pumpkin appetizer plates from Maxcera.

 

This is a brand-new color way of the Talelayo pattern from August Table in brown.

 

I layered the fan-folded napkin on top of a turkey salad plate, a dinner plate and a wooden charger.

 

The little wicker napkin rings pick up on the natural textures of the big basket holding the Thanksgiving Poinsettias.

6 ways to style flowers in vintage tins

Do you collect vintage coffee or tea tins? They're just so cute, and I love the way they can add a pop of color to any table setting.

Today, I’ve gathered a few fun looks for using some of my favorite vintage tins and cans at the table, and I 'm sharing them with you now... 

Above you can see a collection of coffee cans in different sizes that are united by the same color palette of red, white and yellow. Roses and pretty chamomile flowers complement the colors of the coffee tins.

 

Tea tins are another favorite way to coordinate a cohesive look. These red and white tins have a nice square shape and sets the tone for this table. 

The vintage Twinings tins are my favorites, and they come in all sorts of colors, flavors and sizes.

Isn't this is a fun look for a tea party or book club?  

 

A battered but loved Uneeda Cookie tin has a few dents, but I adore the soft blue colors and graphics on it. Soft pink roses are a fun choice to balance the muted tones.

 

The artwork on this Amaretti tin really spoke to me. Maybe it’s the texture and colors that I love so much, and it’s nice contrast to the woven look of the basket of geraniums.

 

I filled it with a small bunch of sweet blue forget-me-nots from the garden, and they help to unite the subtle tones of the tin with the tablecloth.

Yellow daffodils and nasturtium brighten up these two blue vintage cans. Don’t you love the graphic nature of this look? The lettering on the tins has such a nostalgic look.

 

A vintage Cracker Jack tin infuses just the right amount of summer fun to the summer clam bake table I set last week. Simple white hydrangeas do the trick to fill this oldie but goodie.

 

The subtle red, white and blue colors of the Cracker Jack logo strengthen the theme of the patriotic tablecloth and napkins.

 

Here are just a few of the dozens and dozens of  fun tea tins I've collected over the years. They're perfect to use for flowers and add just the right amount of whimsy to any table.

Keep a look out for these little wonders. You never know where you might spot a cute one. Even the grocery store or specialty market have ones that are fun to collect.

how to style vintage tins with flowers

 

One of my favorite and whimsical ways to style flowers is with colorful cans! These fun tin treasures add a charming “pop art” look to any floral arrangement.

 

This Amaretti tin is my latest find on Ebay, and I filled it with forget-me-nots from the garden. The scented geraniums are blooming right now in the front yard in a delicious cloud of pink, and I could resist gathering a big bunch to add a little cottage charm to the table.

 

A vintage Butter Wafer tin make a fun container for this lovely bunch of pink cottage roses from Trader Joe’s. Gather them in a tight bunch, secure with wire or floral tape, trim to desired length and place in the water-filled cookie tin.

Tones of green, yellow, ivory and white flowers harmonize nicely with this collection of flea-market tea tins.

 

The nasturtium are a variety called Peach Melba that I grow in my garden, and I picked up the daffodils at Whole Foods Market, and they smell divine!

 

They certainly brighten up this part of the living room, and add a dose of sunshine, even on the cloudiest of days.

 

This table centerpiece appeared in a 2021 issue of Country Sampler Farmhouse Style. I used only vintage coffee tins, filled with real flowers that I picked up at the market.

 

The main theme for this look was picking up the color red from the striped napkins and working it in with the lovely yellow blooms of the roses and chamomile.

 

Keep your eyes open while grocery shopping for graphic designs on cans that instantly grab your attention. White daisies are just the right kind of cottage flower to fill these inexpensive containers for an effortless look.

This colorful look is from a Cinco de Mayo gathering I did way back in 2017. Look for cans that have the graphics printed right on them. There are many Mexican foods that have lovely artwork on their tins.

 

I love this inspiration found on pinterest. The Honey label is so pretty!

 

Even though the flowers don’t match the colors of this can, I still love this look, also from pinterest.

 

Flea markets and eBay are great places to find vintage cans. Grocery stores also have wonderful tin options for styling flowers, houseplants and even cactus varieties.

 

My collection of vintage tins is slowly growing, so you may see a few more flowery scenes like these from me very soon!
