inside ellen pompeo's los angeles home

In the September issue of Good Housekeeping magazine, Grey’s Anatomy star and admitted homebody Ellen Pompeo invites GH into her Los Angeles abode for a sneak peek at how she relaxes at home.

For Ellen, this home is truly where her heart is. With the help of her friend and interior decorating partner, Martyn Lawrence Bullard.

They worked together on every inch of this renovation and design, often drawing inspiration from fashion, a favorite hotel in Morocco and popular hangouts like Soho House in New York (which gave her the idea to put big velvet sofas in the rooms).

“Every room was sort of inspired by something different. A lot of fashion design inspired a lot of the rooms.” --EP

“The house represents [my family] because it’s hip but also comfortable. The furniture tells a story once it’s been lived in.

That’s what makes a house a home. I’m a straight-up homebody. It’s hard to get me out of the house once the sun goes down.” --EP

“The house was like an old relic. It hadn’t been updated since it was built in the 20s. Everything about the house needed to be refreshed; the gardens, especially.

There were no gardens. It was just a yard full of dirt. So to build the gardens was so fun, something that I had never done before. I’m still not finished, I’ll keep adding to it.

To be able to have all the fruit trees and the chickens and everything, I think it’s so nice for the kids. I think everything I did outside was with the girls in mind.”  --EP

Ellen shares more about the inspiration for her home design, how her happy home and family life is the complete opposite of her childhood, how she’s most like Meredith Grey and her dream guest stars for Grey’s Anatomy

Check out the September issue of Good Housekeeping, on newsstands August 16 for all the rest!

💕

While I’m here today, I wanted to share some of my "Tablescaping Essentials" with you. I have a whole page on the Amazon website with my favorite picks for setting a beautiful table.

Quite often time is of the essence, and I have last minute projects or events to work on, so I turn to Amazon for one or two day delivery. You’d be surprised at how many amazing items they have to offer! And I'm constantly updating this page with my new favorites.

You can check it out here, at Tablescaping Essentials.

mary mcdonald's home on m d d

a work in progress

This week on the season finale of
Million Dollar Decorators,
Mary showed off her newly revamped house.
The adjectives thrown around to describe
the update were cool "grandma-ish",
"Palm Beach", "Palm Springs", and "1970's"
all with a modern twist that only Mary can pull off.

She chose a pretty green and white
Quadrille wallpaper and matching fabric
for her kitchen nook area.

I love the velvet chairs and modern light fixture

detail of Quadrille wall covering and fabric

pretty details too
  In her bedroom,
Mary centered the design on a
beautiful hand-painted
Gracie wall paper that is ultra-feminine
and very traditional,
even if it meant carpeting
over a graphic floor she just had painted.

The end product is stunning.
I love the subtle soft pink accessories
scattered about.

Gorgeous sitting area

a great mix of modern touches

a little soft pink is perfect
Mary's living room was described
by Kathryn as "very grown-up",
even though there was a funny smell in there,
haha!

Beautiful shades of green fabrics
with white walls dominate this design.
Personal touches in the form of accessories
that she has collected over the years,
 add personality to the room.

Simple and grown-up

beautiful symmetry

and gorgeous details

million dollar decorators this week

This week on Million Dollar Decorators,

I discovered that Mary McDonald
and I have the same porch railing design
on the front of our houses!

I love her, and I can't believe
I somehow managed to create something
at my house that mirrors her style...
purely coincidental,
but so cool!

Mary has such great style!

Next, Jeffrey and Ross decorated
a vacation home in Nantucket,
and oh, I am in love!

The house turned out so hip and beachy,
but with a definite New England vibe.

And lastly, Martyn flew to England
to help his sister remodel an old pub she purchased.

I don't know, do you think this wallpaper is "pubby" enough?

I guess it is!

butera style at maison de luxe

Maison de Luxe at
was a beautiful collaboration of
well-known interior designers,
who each designed individual rooms.

Set during the festive
holidays in December
and located at the grand
and historic Greystone Mansion

here's a peek at the living room
designed by Barclay Butera.

A grand room with Butera's trademark blue pottery

Soft colors and bold wood pieces

More symmetry with the leopard wing chairs, library tables and window seat.

Extreme tufting and lots of cushy pillows, with the rug giving a beachy sort of vibe
