Every October, beautiful vibrant pumpkins peer out from porches and doorsteps in the United States and other parts of the world. 

Closer to the end of the month, these huge orange fruits carved with ghoulish faces and lit by candles are a sure sign of the Halloween season. 

Carving pumpkins into Halloween jack-o’-lanterns is a way of life here, but this tradition originated hundreds of years ago in Ireland. 

Back then, however, Ireland had no pumpkins, so jack-o’-lanterns were made out of turnips or potatoes. The practice of decorating “jack-o’-lanterns” comes from an Irish folktale about a man named Stingy Jack. Ancient Celtic cultures in Ireland carved turnips on All Hallow's Eve, and placed an ember in them, to keep evil spirits away. 

When Irish immigrants first arrived in America, they discovered pumpkins and a new Halloween tradition was born!

l.a. vintage style home

Designer Kristan Cunningham mixes and matches design styles in her historic 1925 L.A. home.  She creatively modernizes this vintage home with simple and inexpensive flea-market finds.  As you take a visual tour of this home, enjoy all the gothic-style arches in the doors, windows and even the staircase.  I love the simple color pallet and rich textures.

house beautiful's factory girl apartment

Designer Heather Moore created this luxurious space for Designer Vision: Cinema Style, and was inspired by the movie Factory Girl. 

Located at 1212 5th Avenue in New York, this apartment is designed to honor Edie Sedgwick, Andy Warhol and Jed Johnson who were featured in the film. 

Heather used mid-century pieces, modern items and organic textures in this chocolate brown living space. Paint color is Ralph Lauren's Suede paint in Arrow Wood.

In the morning, the dining room walls

 become more orange, and less brown.  

I love the sputnik chandelier. 

Artwork is influenced by Warhol's signature vivid colors.

 Veranda Bamboo tiles are reminiscent of a fluted column. 

Petite footstools with faux-lambswool tops.

Iconic photography and 1950's sconces dominate the entry.

A bubble chair and lavender and purple color scheme 

is probably any 12 year old girl's dream.
