this year's kitchen & bath trends

Kohler is now sharing its décor trends and design expertise with its 2017 Kitchen and Bath Trends.

With their help, they say they can turn our homes into Instagram-worthy living spaces without breaking the bank! In creating the Kohler 2017 Kitchen and Bathroom Trends, the company discusses details: what particular colors mean, how to use them, and what’s trending right now.

Here’s a little peek at some of the aspects that I love from their new collection of trends…

In this gorgeous black-and-white kitchen, a wash of bright white counters cover the island and punctuate the grand room sheathed in black cabinets.

If you’re an eclectic person, having your kitchen be a solid black and white is important because you may have bright colors that you want to incorporate.

The space combines timeless quality with a perfect modern mix.

You can’t go wrong with a white kitchen or bath. Trends come and go, but white kitchens are overwhelmingly the most popular. They feel clean and bright. Since it is typically the first place homeowners go in the morning, white makes a lot of sense.

Nevertheless, a white room can look stark, so the challenge is to keep it crisp and clean but still make it an inviting space. One way to soften the look of a white kitchen is with warm tones like brass, gold, or bronze. In this classic galley kitchen, the scheme gives it a modern edge by using countertops with subtle flecks of gold and brass fixtures instead of nickel or chrome.

Brass and bronze elements brings out those little flecks of gold and reflect a little bit of light and create a warm ambience without you really knowing it.

Keep It in Neutral! Today’s neutrals play in a more unusual palette than you might expect—think pale icy blue and blush sand and more refreshing straight-from-nature shades than your standard beige. They’re perfect for small rooms. Just because a space is smaller, does not mean you have to use color less, you just have to use it wisely.

These more transparent pales diffuse light beautifully and lend themselves particularly well to elements of contrast. In this tiny house kitchen, a matte black faucet and an olive countertop pop against icy blue cabinets.

Another room where you start your day? The bathroom, of course! This elegant white bath is energized with a modern mix of metals—a bold brass chandelier paired with titanium bath fixtures. Warm wood floors ground the room and soften the look of the all-white space. It’s just enough “clean and bright” for a morning pick-me-up, without jolting you into the day.

The main thing is the reflection, making sure that it didn’t feel bogged down by the color and the texture. And, of course, a moody atmosphere is perfect for a powder room or a master bath.

Here in this Victorian-inspired bathroom, smoky grays and dusty browns are paired with a metallic wallcovering and warm bronze light fixtures, giving a glow that radiates through an already welcoming room.

In this master bath, bold chevron floor tiles offset the glossy white tub with a matte black exterior. Highlights of bronze, brass, or copper work particularly well layered into the overall design—here bronze adds a touch of warmth to this dynamic space.

Did you know Kohler's rich heritage as a bathroom and kitchen innovator boasts many industry firsts, including the world's first cast iron bath tub and the first colored bathroom suite? Pretty cool!

brass furniture now

Brass furniture, once so passé, is looking quite hot these days! Caroline Stanbury’s new home in Dubai is looking sleek and chic. The gold tone of her brass table and chairs gives off a modern vibe, but has the elegant style of the 1970’s, #throwback!

And this look is turning up in lots of fun stores now too! Jonathan Adler, known for retro-chic style, is featuring brass furnishings like crazy right now!

Add a little touch of glamour to your home! Maybe you just need a can of metallic gold spray paint to update some of your things! Think out of the box...

Look at this brass bedside table. It’s got ultra-traditional style that’s always a classic.

I say “YES" to these gorgeous barstools!

This little work space would look wonderful in any room!

So cute!

vintage brass accessories

I've been a little obsessed lately with these little vintage brass accessories. I've picked up a few here and there over the years, but I recently found some really fun ones on ebay. It all started when I spotted one of these Eiffel Tower pieces, and then I found another….

The prices are quite reasonable on most of these.  It’s so fun to sprinkle them around here and there where you need a little zhushing.  A little brass detail looks great in any room!

Next I found these pretty little hands,

and this cute little alligator that also doubles as a nutcracker.

I love this little turtle from Halcyon House.

Here’s an elegant stallion from Domaine.

This is one of my favorite looks,
but honestly, those horns scare me a bit!
Let me know what you think of this look.

as bold as brass

Have you been noticing the
reappearance of brass hardware?

It's so pretty in the kitchen,

especially with white, black or gray

   a classic look

and I love it with carrara marble

It's so elegant in the bath too>

If you're thinking about changing
your hardware, consider brass!

jessica alba at home

The newest issue of BHG beautiful features the beautiful Jessica Alba on the cover, and inside, she opens up a few rooms of her home to share with us all.  I love her fun style and organic mix of patterns and textures.  I also found a few photos from Domino of Jessica’s daughters’ bedrooms for you all to see.

The simple backgrounds and mix of bold patterns in the sitting area of Jessica's master bedroom are amazing, as is that natural, chunky wood coffee table.

A vintage brass dresser and adorable heart-shaped bulletin boards complement each other in her daughter’s room.

This whimsical desk space would make any little girl feel a bit grown-up, but the whole vibe is so playful!

This beautiful etagere brings in more elegant brass into the room, and the cute bunny ears make this room so much fun !

So gorgeous!  Can you spot another bunny?

I just love all the brass accents that she
has incorporated throughout her home.
Tell me what you love most!

thanksgiving table with hints of amethyst

Here’s the final Thanksgiving tablescape for tomorrow. You know I have been playing around with different elements all month, but I’m really pleased with the results.

I happened to run to South Coast Plaza yesterday to see if I could score a new raffia table runner for our bigger table and I found this one, that’s down the center of the table. It complements the two burlap runners with the squiggle pattern that I have running perpendicular.

I also couldn’t resist these three preserved boxwood topiaries that I saw at West Elm.

The star of the table, for me, is this set of vintage amethyst cut-glass tumblers. They catch the light just right! I also added these vintage purple sundae glasses to add a little more amethyst.

Then, for a little added sparkle I'm using brass candlesticks with simple white tapers and gold glittery votives. White pumpkins finish off the look.

And it all came together like this:
Burlap Chargers: Oriental Trading
Dinner Plates: Vintage Wedgwood
Amethyst Glassware: Vintage
Water Goblets: Vintage
Tall Brass Candlestick: Pottery Barn
Other Brass Candlesticks: Vintage
White Taper Candles: Trader Joe's
Boxwood Topiaries: West Elm
Pheasant Feathers: Oriental Trading
"Be Thankful" charms: Oriental Trading
Silver Flatware: Vintage

in through the black door

After living in our home for over 16 years,
we've decided it is time to replace our front doors.
The opening allows for two thirty inch double doors,
so I have been pinning some of my favorite looks as inspiration.

We've selected a wooden door style
with raised panels and
a row of four windows at the top,
which have a transom like feel.

and add lots of brass details!

I think that look is so chic!

Now I need to find some
fabulous vintage brass knockers
and then add a brass kick plate at the bottom.
I'll be using my existing handles,
which I love.

Here are my favorite inspiration photos.
